Summer Rayne Oakes is the creator of Homestead Brooklyn—helping folks bring green indoors and out. She's an important leader in the gardening movement, and she got one of the first peeks at my new book, Kitchen Garden Revival. She's the author of one of my favorite gardening books, How to Make a Plant Love You.
If you haven't read it yet, when you're ordering my book, order hers too!
"Very well done, Nicole. The photography is luscious. Props to the photographer. Book is very easy to follow."

Here's what Summer Rayne Oakes had to say about Kitchen Garden Revival:
"In this beautifully executed book, Nicole takes us by the hand and walks us down the garden path—showing us step-by-step how we can start growing our own food in simple, sensible and stylish ways. If you're brand new to kitchen gardening, this book is a great primer; and if you're an old pro, the garden designs she has laid out in relation to the home, will inspire you to rethink your own foodscape."
Summer Works In Her Community Garden in New York City
The community garden is Summer's respite in the middle of New York City. This past year, she got to plan out and plant an 800 square foot "shade" garden in the back and filled it with trees and plants that would bloom all season long, including redbud, dogwood, winter hazel, witch hazel, serviceberry, and more.

Summer Grows Thousands of Houseplants in Her New York City Apartment
Summer likes to attempt to grow non-traditional "houseplants" as well, like cassava or Manihot esculenta, for example. It's a challenging one to grow indoors because she find it's susceptible to thrips in the height of the summer months, but it goes through dormancy in the winter and bounces back every spring like you see here.

Summer's latest book, 'How to Make A Plant Love You' released in 2019 and is full of so much inspiration, instruction and insight into growing and nurturing your own plants. It's a 'must read' for anyone interested in growing a little more green in their life.
